Explore Papua New Guinea above and
beneath the waves. Choose between Niugini Diving's various voyages
or customise one to suit your needs. The choice is endless!
Most Niugini Diving expeditions depart from Lae, the capital of
Morobe Province and the gateway to the highland areas of Papua New
Guinea. The city is nestled between New Britain and the Huon Peninsula,
which are blanketed by impenetrable rainforest and mountains. Lae
was host to the gold rush days of the 1920s when Lae and Salamaua
played a major part in the development of the goldfields at Wau
and Bololo.
Situated twenty miles to the south of Lae, today Salamaua is a
sleepy little weekend get-away for the local residents. However,
in the 1920s Salamaua was a thriving port until it was demolished
in WWII.
Further north towards Lae is Maus Buang which is a breeding site
of the leatherback turtle. These turtles can weigh up to five
hundred kilograms and measure up to two metres in length. They come
ashore to lay their eggs from November to February each year and
during this season guests are encouraged to visit their breeding
grounds
.
